The RSCMA Carolina Summer Choral Residency is pleased to welcome Sonya Subbayya Sutton as this year’s Music Director!

Sonya Subbayya Sutton has enjoyed a 40+ year career as a musician in the Episcopal Church, which has included twenty years as Organist/Choirmaster at St. Alban’s in Washington, D.C. and ten years serving parishes in transition as Interim Music Director. In 2026 she was Interim Director for Sacred Music at The Chautauqua Institution, playing for and conducting choirs in seven weekly worship services over the nine week season. She is also the Music Director of the World Bank/IMF Chorus and frequently collaborates with other instrumentalists as an accompanist and chamber musician. Sonya has directed choirs in ten European tours and cathedral residencies and played or sung for four more. She is a Past President of the Association of Anglican Musicians and currently serves on the board of The Boulanger Initiative, which promotes the work of women composers from antiquity to today. She is a member of the Episcopal Church’s Standing Commission for Liturgy and Music. Sonya earned degrees in piano, organ, and arts administration from the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. She and her husband, the Right Rev. Eugene Sutton, have four children in their blended family and divide their time between Washington D.C. and western New York.
